Ours is a story-telling family. Nearly any occasion, large or small, evolves into a story-fest accompanied by a lot of laughter and sometimes a few tears. But, like most oral traditions, recording the family history has been another matter. We've talked about it a lot, but had done relatively little until recently. Beginning in 1993 with the publication of a short section of stories into a number of binders, the stories you find within here began taking shape.
The first efforts at recording the history began with Isabel Piper Olson Busch. Unfortunately, we only have a snippet of her effort to tell the story of her mother-in-law, Karen Hermanson Olson Ellison. The task was left for succeeding generations. Beginning in 1993 with the efforts of Helen (Honey) Olson and Lynn Vanderlinde, the stories began taking shape and have been added too ever since.
Recording everything can seem too overwhelming to even begin. Then we realize that our family histories are not smooth blankets of continuity, but rather scraps and patches of the fabric of our lives -- a quilt. And in the case of our family, probably a crazy quilt of multiple textures and colors. (And we pride ourselves on being a little nutty!)
This site is designed to be a living, evolving record of the group loosely known as the "Olson Clan". Enjoy what you find, and if you have a story to share, by all means send a message to [email protected] with some text, a file, a picture, or whatever means you have of capturing those memories.
The preceding is adapted from the original foreword to the 1993 collection put together by Helen (Honey) Olson and Lynn Vanderlinde. It's appropriate that they signed off with the note, "here's to the future"! 21 years later, the future has arrived!
